Sol y Luna Nature School includes nutrition as a part of our curriculum because we designed our program to meet the needs of a child's whole self, this includes physical health and well being. A school, in our minds, is not of high quality if they are serving, processed, toxic filled food to children.
Here at Sol y Luna, our kitchen is a part of our classroom, and children partake in observing and assisting in cooking our meals. This begins with harvesting fruit or vegetables from our garden when ripe, washing, and prepping the food; chopping, peeling, slicing, shredding, grating. This hands on involvement teaches children valuable life long lessons about nutrition and the importance food plays in our health and wellness. We take great pride in serving fresh produce from local farms, 100% organic, always. It is what our children need in order to become healthy, happy adults.
Nutritional research studies show that children involved in growing, harvesting, and preparing their food have a much higher rate of eating and enjoying their vegetables. Many nutritional findings also show that farm fresh produce has a much higher nutritional content than conventional store bought produce, as produce bought in stores is often shipped thousands of miles and therefore picked before ripe.
Nutrition and healthy, fresh food is a passion for Sol y Luna and we look forward to hosting educational workshops on the topic for our parents and community members.
